In a previous article, we discussed how LifeLock, a recognized identity theft company, is taking their message of identity theft education on the road. In this post, we will discuss what they hope to accomplish during this campaign.

LifeLock feels that a law should be passed to limit the use of one’s social security number. We couldn’t agree more! Companies are working to change their use of consumer’s social security number, but it is still heavily in use. Since social security identity theft is a huge problem, and any reduction in use of social security numbers would be welcomed with open arms.

They feel that the federal standards for lost or stolen data should be revised, holding companies and financial institutions more accountable for their actions. Did you know that there is not a reporting law in all 50 states, requiring companies to report when data is lost or stolen? This means that you might never know if your information goes missing, until such time that you fall victim to identity theft.

Identity theft is a low-risk, high-reward crime for thieves, as most identity theft criminals go unpunished. LifeLock is working on having law makers impose prison sentences on those that steal your identity.

They also want to make credit bureaus more consumer/user friendly, going above and beyond just letting you create a credit bureau fraud alert. If you have ever had to fix a problem with a credit report, then you know that it could be a lot easier! LifeLock wants to ensure that if you are a victim of identity theft, all fraudulent accounts should be cleared immediately.

LifeLock feels that there should be mandatory verbal authorizations for every transaction that affects consumer’s credit reports. A verbal authorization, in conjunction with correct answers to security questions, would be a huge step towards protection from identity fraud.

And lastly, LifeLock feels that you, as a financial consumer, should have ultimate control over your social security number and other personal information, giving you the ability to protect from identity theft. As it stands now, you have little control over such information and over what people can find out about you. It is time for this to change!

As you can see, LifeLock is a wonderful identity theft service company who truly has the consumer’s best intentions at heart. They are definitely on your side when it comes to protection from identity theft.
