Identity theft is a modern problem that has risen since the 1990s with the increase of Internet usage for things such as banking, shopping, and receiving and paying bills etc. A previous survey by the Federal Trade Commission in the U. S. Showed that close to four per cent of American residents became aware they had been the victims of it in 2005. That is approximately eight million people a year, in America alone. And these were just the ones who were aware of it. Talk about eight million reasons why protection against identity theft is vital!
The crime is so popular among thieves because it’s relatively easy to pull off and get away with. However, it’s often devastating for the victims of it as they could lose thousands of dollars and have to spend endless hours trying to rectify their situation. The victims could also suffer bad credit scores because of it and may lose job offers and be denied loans. Identity theft monitoring is a critical part of ensuring your identity is protected.
It can be a serious situation and that’s why it’s important to take as many steps as you possibly can to protect against identity theft. This is sometimes hard though, because there are many sources that crooks can utilize to gain your personal information. It’s imperative that you block them off at all chances to be successful.
You should never give out any of your credit card and banking information and it’s important to shred all physical evidence of them. Don’t use public computers and leave your passwords or any of your accounts open. Be sure to log out of all programs you’ve been using. It’s also a good idea to know where your credit cards, bank book, wallet, and identification are at all times.
Always keep these items in secure places and don’t allow anybody access to them. This includes all types of account numbers and passwords. Also be aware that there are many telephone scams out there. So don’t ever give out information to anybody who phones you. Make sure you make the phone contact and call the institutions you do business with.
